Kolkata used to react sharply to human rights violations of every kind and from any part of the world. Fasts, protests marches and candle light vigils have been held for various crimes, be it Nirbhaya’s violation, or Nandigram killings. Fasts have been held to show solidarity with Anna in his crusade against corruption.
The event that is shaking India from under its feet is the consular official Devyani’s arrest, her strip search, cavity search and being dumped with hardened criminals in the prison. If her maid’s rights were compromised, why did the US spirit the maid’s family to the US duly granting them immigrant status?
The US State department shirks their responsibility stating that it was the Marshalls who subjected the Indian Consular official to the indignities. Despite the anger of our entire nation, not one word of apology from the US.
Where are the emotive Kolkatans? Are there shortage of candles? Where are the protest marches? Indian womanhood stands violated and challenged in the US. Can we wake up and peacefully convey our anger and anguish against the injustice, insensitivity and barbarism in Devyani’s case.
I feel violated too!
