Gandhi
Gandhi suddenly is remembered by Indians closer to his birthday 2nd October, India celebrating his 150th anniversary today. Gandhi’s Ahimsa, non-violent means to oust the British is an unforgettable part of history. Time Magazine named the Dalai Lama, Lech Walesa, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, among others as Children of Gandhi and his spiritual heirs to nonviolence.
He was called the Father of the Nation first by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a title which stuck to him. Gandhi’s ideologies have long been discarded by Indian politicians, who however jostle to garland his statues on this day. The Maha of the Mahatma was conferred on Gandhi Ji by Tagore.
Gandhi was immortalized on the celluloid by a memorable film on him by filmmaker Richard Attenborough. I join the millions in the world, remembering Gandhi and his value based peaceful movements in our freedom struggle.
