In the past few years, I have written many posts on the Indian National Congress, its present pathetic status, and of course on its first family, especially its former president and de facto president Rahul Gandhi. I have nothing personal against the Gandhi family, save their unyielding grip over the party, driving it to death by strangulation. Long gone are the party’s democratic values, and least connected the present leadership is with anything to do with their party’s struggles in the past.
As the Prime Minister of India Nehru served 18 years, Indira Gandhi for 15 years and Rajiv for 6 years. Therefore, it is not abnormal for Sonia Ji and Rahul to dream of continuing their family’s journey of leadership. Sonia Gandhi’s aspirations were scuttled by the then no-nonsense President of India, Abdul Kalam because of her citizenship status. Then, Sonia Ji turned towards her one-point agenda to anoint her son to lead the party, the legislature, and the nation.
Rahul has turned out to be a disaster. He has been constantly imagining that he had an inherited right to the PM’s chair and that Modi is utterly unfit. His blabbers have a consistence, revealing his idiocy more than ever each time he opens his mouth. Whether it was Rafale or Balakot or standoff with the Chinese at Doklam, Rahul firmly believes that he is born to challenge all that Modi says or does. He shuts up only when the highest courts rap over his knuckles.
His latest is ‘Gaddar has returned lands to the Chinese,’- ‘The traitor has returned the lands to the Chinese, meaning Modi.’ The comment is despicable and breaches all civilities.
It may have dawned to Sonia Gandhi of the impossibility to crown Rahul as a PM that resulted in her attempting infusion of another reluctant Gandhi (sic!), Priyanka. The Vadra millstone may not get her beyond the borders of U.P.
Why is Rahul hanging on, despite his dislike and displeasure over politics? Here comes the role of sycophants around him, wrongly convincing him that he alone can rescue the party and the nation from a disaster. There can be no worse disaster than these sycophants, who have glued their future and fortunes with Rahul and Indian politics.
If Indian democracy is at peril, it may not be due to BJP or Modi’s rise. They seem strong merely because of an utterly weak opposition. Congress seems to have reduced to nitpicking Modi or shah despite many good things that have happened in the last seven years of the BJP rule. There has not been a single instance when the Congress party of Rahul coming forward to appreciate the government or to express their pride in our achievements.
I have repeatedly written over the needs of a sound opposition, and the Gandhi INC does not fit in the bill anymore. Fearing a threat to Rahul’s leadership, good leaders of the party have been sidelined. The 2021 state elections will once more prove the insignificance of the Congress party in India. It is too late to undo the damage done, and we have all resigned to the antics of the clown prince. The need for a viable opposition is more important than ever!
