Right or wrong, the social networks are populated with hashtags ‘Mamata as PM for 2024.’ There is nothing with hope and aspiration, as these are the drivers of our lives. The posts are not only by the supporters of Mamata Banerjee but also by the TMC leaders.
Fine! After her sensational third time win of Bengal Assembly elections, which Didi virtually fought for and against the Modi-Shah combine, Mamata has achieved what few political leaders could achieve. The diminutive leader in her cotton sari and flipflop has emerged as the tallest leader to challenge the might of Modi in 2024.
The unofficial anointment of Mamata as the PM aspirant of the TMC began as soon as the election results were announced a month ago. What will happen to West Bengal then was the logical question. Any ambiguity on Mamata’s succession has been cleared in yesterday’s TMC’s organizational meet when Abhishek was appointed as the ‘National General Secretary.’
Interesting, however, is that TMC is out and out a regional party whose influence does not extend beyond the borders of West Bengal. Therefore, to convert a regional party into a National is no easy task, and the party may not possess the wherewithal for the same. TMC must depend on many regional satraps, who must end their dream of heading Delhi to make way for her. More importantly, Didi must manage Gandhis, and Sonia must yield, which is not an easy task.
Meanwhile, the loose cannons of the TMC must become responsible in their utterances. I must name MP Mahua Mitra, Derek O’Brian and Kunal Ghosh to be graceful in their utterances if they want to promote their party leader as PM material.
Bengal could have had Jyoti Basu as a Prime Minister, which was watered down by their party. The period from 2021 and 2024 is crucial, with the elections in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab slated for 2022. TMC must fight elections in Uttar Pradesh if it thinks it is an All-India party!
The PM will be the one who makes fewer mistakes between now and 2024, PM Modi starting his race with a minus five points on the Covid management. The period 2021 until 2024 will expectedly have a less corrupt West Bengal government, fewer Syndicates and cut money to clear the path of Mamata to an elevated position. The TMC must not allow minus points to accumulate by silly rants from her legislators and speedily rehabilitate all poll violence-affected BJP supporters across West Bengal.
A Bengali PM, why not?
