Dinesh Trivedi has resigned from Rajya Sabha. His tantrums in joining the BJP may not be as agonizing as some of his erstwhile colleagues from TMC, like the Salt Lake Mayor Sabyasachi or Rajeev Banerjee the Minister. They kept the suspense on and on like filmmakers not knowing how to end a climax in time. Dinesh could be joining the BJP in the next couple of days with less fuss.
He has suddenly become the darling of the media and a section of the social networks. He stood up to state boisterously of his inner voice “Atma-ki-awaz’ which revealed that his TMC party was corrupt; there was much violence, and the party was run as a corporate by outsiders. He later lamented that newer entrants are becoming more important leaders in the party. Wow! I also try to hear my Atma, which refuses to say anything to me.
Dinesh has had his tryst with the Congress and the Janata Dal before joining the Trinamool Congress. Dinesh became the Union Railway Minister after Mamata resigned to become the CM. He played by the rulebook, keeping the Rail budget details a closely guarded secret, rattling Mamata, who struck hard dumping him and replacing him with her Mukul Roy.
Dinesh lost his 2019 elections to his bete noire Arjun Singh of BJP. He is not a stranger to the political wilderness and waited a few months patiently. Trinamool was no different then. There was corruption, and there was violence. He was provided with a parachute by Mamata Banerjee with a Rajya Sabha nomination a year ago.
Dinesh is suave, diplomatic, and a noble face of TMC. He had developed excellent contacts across all the political parties and their leaders and had become TMC’s pointsman in Delhi. His leaving will leave a void, which cannot be fulfilled by other party MPs like Derek ‘O Brien or Mahua Mitra any time soon.
Whichever party he joins, I hope his Atma does not do a U-turn anytime too soon!
