Tossed out, Truss!
Nothing excites an Indian like a discomfiture of the English. After all, they ruled us for 200 years and left us as paupers. The royalty flaunting the prized Indian Kohinoor diamond on the crown gives an unpalatable acidity to stomachs.
Boris Johnson, a maverick, had to quit not in glory but forced by unpardonable violations with his bashes even when his country faced Covid restrictions. A loud display of vociferous bouts between PM contenders Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak kept the public charmed. Liz Struss won the race, probably because she was more blue-blooded English than Rishi.
Liz’s problems arose soon after the announcement on tax-cuts by the Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, sinking the British pound and the bourses. Kwasi quit. This was not all. Liz emphasised a free trade agreement with India, which she considered an important player in propping up the English economy, which seemed to be a non-starter.
Liz put up a brave face with a sorry, and that amends is made for the mistakes committed. She offered a rollback on the tax cuts for the corporates announced. Liz made a boisterous announcement, assuring her party members of serving her full residual term. Unfortunately, the market in turmoil did not echo her sentiments. She stepped down less than 24 hours after the brave announcement, “I am a fighter, not a quitter.”
Liz’s home secretary, Suella Braverman, incidentally with Indian antecedents, soon made unsavoury comments about overstaying Indian migrants. The remarks did not amuse the Indian government and resulted in PM Modi putting off his plans to sign the FTA with the United Kingdom. That did Suella in, who resigned in disgrace resulting in more M.P.s coming out against Liz truss.
Finally, her absence from the parliament and facing the situation cost her dearly. Despite tall claims that she would serve the full term, Liz Truss had to quit as the shortest-serving Prime Minister after 44 days. A new Prime Minister has to be appointed by October 28, and the new Chancellor of the exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, a probable declining to be a candidate for the Tories. Rishi’s chances have brightened, but I expect a new true-English Tories flag bearer to emerge from the rubble.
The English, whimsical and not seeing beyond their stiff nose, join Italy, famous their short government tenures and frequent changes.
