Personal Life and Academic Background

S.S. Kumar, a multifaceted individual, is happily married to Radha and is a proud parent to two children, Vinita and Arvind. Growing up, Kumar completed his schooling at the renowned National High School in Kolkata. He pursued his higher education at Calcutta University, obtaining a Commerce and Law degree. Additionally, Kumar holds a diploma in Textile Technology. Early in his career, he briefly practiced at the Supreme Court of India before transitioning to take over his family business.

Trade Body Engagements and Noteworthy Contributions to the Industry

Throughout his professional journey, Kumar has been deeply involved in various industrial activities and has represented multiple trade bodies. Notably, he served as the esteemed National Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports. Kumar played a pivotal role in successfully relocating the Kolkata tanneries from the city to the modern Kolkata Leather Complex, situated outside its limits. He also held the position of Co-Chairman of the FICCI Leather Panel (ER) and served as a member of the influential High-Powered Committee on Calcutta Leather Complex, established by the Government. Additionally, Kumar actively contributed to the task force responsible for monitoring the implementation of Corporate Responsibility in Environmental Protection, initiated by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. He currently serves as an executive committee member of the prestigious Bharat Chamber of Commerce and holds the position of Chairman of the Standing Committee.

Academic and Social Engagements

Kumar is deeply committed to the administration of academic institutions. Over the years, he has held the position of President at the National High Schools, Kolkata, for an impressive 12 years. Furthermore, he served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Government College of Engineering & Leather Technology, GoWB, for a remarkable 18 years. Additionally, Kumar has played a vital role as the Vice President of AHEAD, an esteemed school dedicated to empowering children with special needs.

Social work, hobbies, and recognition

Beyond his professional pursuits, Kumar is a dedicated social worker, actively engaging in several social projects. He is also an avid sportsman and proudly holds memberships in the Indian Life Saving Society and the Lake Club. Kumar's commitment to service is further demonstrated through his role as Assistant Governor of Rotary Districts in Bengal.

In his leisure time, Kumar indulges in various hobbies and passions. As a naturalist and talented photographer, he was a member of the Royal Photographic Society in England. His passion for photography has led to the publication of several books. Additionally, Kumar is a blogger, poet, painter, avid reader, and enthusiastic traveler, particularly to wildlife parks. Kumar, besides three coffee table books, has authored two English novels, The Frozen Waves and Èmó, two anthologies of English poems, they, she and I and Contours as well as a book on Tamil poems, besides a treatise, Tamils Of Bengal and a book on self-development named ‘Blastoff'.

Knighthood and International Accolades

In 2006, the Italian Government bestowed upon Kumar one of the highest civilian honours, the Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity, in recognition of his exceptional contributions.
